Consumer Law

Consumer law provides protections for buyers from unfair sales, collections, fraud, and deceptive practices.  You may be protected by consumer laws when you buy goods or services for personal use.  Federal and state laws and regulations protect consumers when they have little power to negotiate fair terms of a contract of sale.  For example, a landlord/tenant agreement is both a contract and a consumer transaction.  In some cases, these laws may govern the way your landlord must act towards you as a consumer.  Another example is collection of credit card debt.   When you receive calls or letters from a collection agency, federal or state law  provides important protections from harassment.

NPLS generally provides assistance to people in need of help with debt collection, bankruptcy, landlord/tenant matters, and problems with utilities.
