Legal Secretary – Part-Time (60%)
Schedule: Part-time -- Approximately 21 hours per week
Location: Pittston, PA
Pay: $21,885-$23,985 annually, based on qualifications and experience
Work Arrangement: Primarily in-office, with regular in-person attendance expected
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Background
North Penn Legal Services (NPLS) is a nonprofit civil legal aid organization serving 20 counties throughout Northeast Pennsylvania through nine regional offices. We provide legal representation, advocacy, and community legal education to individuals and families who cannot otherwise afford legal assistance.
NPLS is seeking a Legal Secretary to provide clerical, administrative, and client support to attorneys and paralegals in our Pittston office. This is an opportunity to join a team dedicated to expanding access to justice and providing meaningful legal services to individuals and families throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and format legal documents and correspondence.
- Assist with electronic court filings, data entry, and medical record compilation.
- Assist with client screening and intake.
- Process incoming and outgoing mail.
- Maintain case files and assist with file closing and funding requirements.
- Answer phones, schedule appointments, and assist clients and visitors.
- Assist with office supplies, equipment, and other administrative tasks.
- Provide backup support to other staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Demonstrated secretarial or administrative skills.
- Strong computer and word-processing skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to complete typing and word-processing tasks accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new technology and systems.
Preferred:
- Legal office or administrative experience.
- Knowledge of legal terminology or procedures.
- Experience with case management systems or Gaval.
- Client intake or screening experience.
- Spanish or other bilingual language skills.

- Cash-in-Lieu Benefit – Qualifying employees may receive $4,680 annually (potentially $195 per semi-monthly paycheck) in lieu of medical coverage.
- 401(k) Retirement – NPLS contributes 5.5% of eligible compensation to a Vanguard retirement plan, regardless of whether the employee makes their own contribution. Employees become eligible to participate on the first day of the month following completion of 90 days of employment.
- HSA/FSA Support – Employer funding may be available toward an HSA or FSA, depending on the medical plan selected.
- Voluntary Benefits – Employees may elect additional coverage, including term life and AD&D insurance for themselves and eligible family members, as well as critical illness, cancer, whole life, accident, and pet insurance.
